Three months already went by this year. This is my third Project 10×12 post. I am making an exception this month. Instead of sharing 10 photos, I am showing 12 photos. It is because my dad came in town to visit us! He stayed with us for 10 days. I didn’t see him for more than a year. The last time I saw him was when Wesley was born and he left when Wesley was 2 weeks. Now Wesley is 17 months. We all see family as our priority in our lives and how could he not see his grand-babies for so long? He gave up his life in New York City and moved back to China 2 years ago to take care of my elderly grandparents. His mother had a stroke last year and was in coma for a couple months. She passed away in January this year. My dad was very sad for a long time, but he could finally come to see us.
My dad is the one who inspired me in everything about art – design, photography, and video production. He was a professor in aerospace engineering in a university in Shanghai for almost 20 years before he started his own business. He had a successful 3D animation company in Shanghai back in the 90s. I grew up watching him making 3D animation appearing in movies and TV commercials. My childhood was splendid. He had a Nikon SLR and he taught me the basics of photography when I was 5. OK, I should save a few details for my father’s day story.
As a grandpa he “spoils” Audrey and Wesley by playing with them. He is a great illustrator too. Audrey was so amazed by his drawing when my dad was teaching her. She can draw circles, simple birds, grass, and flowers now. I took some pictures on a warm day this month when my dad was playing with the kids in our backyard. No one was dressed up for pictures. It was all casual and candid moments. I love the one of my dad holding Wesley’s hand walking. There’s another one Audrey was running in front of them. Wesley was so happy to go outside playing with rocks and he giggled so hard. Audrey likes to throw rocks and I ran the risk of my life to be in front of her 🙂 I caught a few flying rocks in the pictures. My dad tried to tell her not to throw rocks at people and she listened. In the last picture, she picked up a big rock and pretended it was a cell phone. She talked and talked using that rock for a long time. Wesley was like, “hi Audrey, what are you doing?” These pictures will be cherished so much when the kids grow up. It is really the second time Audrey saw my dad and Wesley’s first time. Audrey did remember my dad because we facetime occasionally and I show her grandpa’s pictures a lot. She misses grandpa so bad now. It’s been a week since my dad went back to China. Every night after I pick up the kids from daycare, Audrey would say that she wanted to go home and see grandpa. She will go to my dad’s room to look for him after we come home. Then she will say “grandpa went to work.” We didn’t tell her that. She was comforting herself. Audrey knows a family member who “goes to work” will definitely come back soon! We told her that grandpa will come back to see her in a few months 🙂 We had so much fun during my dad’s visit. Even little Wesley could say grandpa in Chinese now. We are all looking forward for my dad’s next visit.
Everyone has their own stories. Check out my talented photographer friends’ 10×12 of March.
