I love photographing babies and children because they are the only subjects who could express themselves freely. They are very different subjects than teenages and adults. Although I offer styled studio baby sessions, I still favor the lifestyle photos of babies and small children. The lifestyle session really brings out the true personality of a young spirit by capturing candid moments and interaction among family members.
Recently I had a honor to photographing baby Eli’s lifestyle newborn session. Eli’s full name is Elijah Gilbert Goth. There is no special meaning behind Elijah, it was just a speical boy name that Eli’s parents agreed on. Gilbert is the name of Eli’s great grandfather who passed away several years ago. Eli’s dad spent a lot of time together with him and had a very special relationship. Baby Eli is such an easy baby. He is full of energy and active, but at the same time eats and sleeps really well. He only needs 2-3 feeds at night at day 12. Eli could almost roll over… There’re just so many fun facts about this little man.
Eli’s mother Michelle is a gorgeous working mom. Michelle and I used to work on the same floor. Although Eli is her first baby, she is already a pro at taking care of newborn. We started the session around 8:30 in the morning at her house. Baby Eli was not having a great morning. This is the beautiful part of a lifestyle session. Instead of waiting and calming a baby down to pose in a boutique newborn studio session, I could take photos when mom is calming the baby down, when mom is feeding the baby, or anytime I think there’s a great moment between new mom and the baby. Although it’s a lifestyle session. I still prepared a lot details out. The detailed shots such as newborn baby’s feet, fingers, hair are a must. The most important part is capturing interaction between mommy and baby. Michelel’s cat Pink loves Eli too. He made a couple appearance throughout the session. Finally he fell in love with my newborn posing bean bag and wouldn’t get off, so I had to snap a shot of that.
One of my favorite part of this session is when Michelle was feeding Eli. I told her to totally ignore my existence. I shot from their living room through Eli’s nursery with the door half open. It was so sweet to see how much caring and famine Michelle is after becoming a mother.
At the end, we took some shots at her bedroom. She and her husband Craig take Eli to their bedroom at night to better take care of him. Michelle was trying to rock Eli to sleep, but she was too tired and fell a asleep first. Baby Eli finally used all his energy and fell asleep with mommy. Shooting this scene almost made me cry…
Michelle had a final request – take a closeup shot of Eli’s left ear, which is a little elf shaped ear. They think it is so cute and I agree. This was a great lifestyle newborn session. I look forward to see baby Eli return for his 3 months and 1 year photos!
