Remember baby Elliott from the Elliott’s Fresh 48 two weeks ago? He came back to my studio for his newborn session. This little boy showed same characteristics from his Fresh 48. He was almost awake the entire time from his newborn session. Elliott’s mom loves to bake and wanted to a baking theme. He decided he wanted to be awake while he was starring in the baby bakery as the master chef. He was so strong to kick off the mixing bowl and pul off his own chef hat. I shot in tethered mode, so we could see the images right on my computer screen. His daddy and mommy said that newborn babies do not have to be asleep in all images, so we passed on the chef theme.
Still baby Elliott was awake for the first 3 hours after several feedings and mini naps. His mommy had to hold him on her chest to let him nap. As soon as she moved he will wake up. He was obiviously having a tough day because his schedule was off the night before. Just about they were going to give up on the photo session, I asked to hold Elliott for a few minutes while his mommy could grab a few bites. I held baby Elliott close, walked in my studio, and sang a little lullaby. After 15 minutes, he fell asleep! I asked his daddy and mommy if I could start shooting again, although we were both so tired, they agreed to give it another try. He was still in light sleep, so we could only shoot in poses that could move him less. He slept in the little laundry basket pretty well. We played white noise in the background and moved him to another fruit bowl and he was starting wake up. Oh boy! He had his eyes wide open in the bowl. We tried to do the bean bag pose, but he did not want to sleep anymore, so I swaddled him using his favorite blanket. He slept fine, but he woke up right after we took off his swaddle and won’t go back to sleep again. At that point, it was almost 5 hours and his daddy and mommy called the night. I took some behind the scene pictures for them.
I am not a fan of posed newborn portraits because they do not tell a lot of stories beside being pretty. That’s why I decided not to take any more boutique newborn sessions. I will still take lifestyle newborn session at client home or Fresh 48 in the hospital. While my kids are still so little, I want to focus on them more. Maybe after my kids all grow up, I will consider taking studio newborn sessions again. In the mean time, I still take baby sessions, just not newborn. I love to have more interaction with babies when they are at least 3 months old. That’s when they open their eyes, smile, giggle, and play with me. I look forward to see baby Elliott coming back for his 3 months, 6, months, and 1 year session!
