Issue No. 2 of my Family Joy project this year focuses on the Chinese New Year celebration! It is always a tradition for us to cook a lot of dishes on Chinese New Year’s eve. Family members sit around the table to enjoy the good food. Although I have lived in the States for 16 years, my family still keeps the tradition to celebrate Chinese New Year. This year is the year of horse. Audrey and Wesley each has a ride-on rocking horse. They all dressed up in Chinese traditional outfit. We cooked and ate a lot. This is like another Christmas holiday meal for us. One of my photography goals of this year is to get back on food pictures! I used to take tons of food pictures before...
Who doesn’t like prime rib? It’s my favorite type of steak. I like it even better than filet mignon. A few weeks ago, we got a great deal on prime rib and my husband cooked a fantastic meal. While he was cooking, I took pictures of Audrey playing the 7-piece puzzle. She also tried to put lip balm on Wesley. Wesley doesn’t care, he was so focused examing my light meter. The meal was the best after Christmas holiday. Besides the entree, the sides include mac and cheese, cream of spinach and artichoke, and mashed potato with bacon and scallion. We all couldn’t be more satisfied with the meal. We need to burn the extra calories after the meal, so we took the kids to play in the backyard. It...

Last year’s Project 10×12 is a big success. I want to continue working on a personal project this year and call it Family Joy. The number of images I share in this project varies every month, but the goal is to capture the sweet moments among my family members. I realized that I spent less time with my kids towards the end of last year due to overflow of photo sessions. It makes me sad that they grow up so fast. I decided to take less sessions this year to spend more time with my family. The first Family Joy story focuses on our big family reunion taken place during Christmas holiday. This almost never happened before. We had a full house. I mean it! Both my parents and my...
I love photographing babies and children because they are the only subjects who could express themselves freely. They are very different subjects than teenages and adults. Although I offer styled studio baby sessions, I still favor the lifestyle photos of babies and small children. The lifestyle session really brings out the true personality of a young spirit by capturing candid moments and interaction among family members. Recently I had a honor to photographing baby Eli’s lifestyle newborn session. Eli’s full name is Elijah Gilbert Goth. There is no special meaning behind Elijah, it was just a speical boy name that Eli’s parents agreed on. Gilbert is the name of Eli’s great grandfather who passed away several years ago. Eli’s dad spent a lot of time together with him and had a...
Part 3 of the modeling headshots. I really enjoyed working with these two models and their families. This time we went to a famous landmark in Kansas City – Country Club Plaza. It was such a nice and warm day this winter. This is Vivian Neuharth. She has one of my favorite classic female names. I met Vivian briefly before her headshot session. We talked about life, career, and photography. Our personality seems match perfectly and also share lots of common views about life and society. I also helped her picking outfits for her modeling session. Vivian is a health and wellness professional. She is 5’12” and also a print model. She deeply believes in holistic health approach and Chinese medicine. She even brought me some homemade whole wheat bread and...
Here comes the second part of the modeling headshot session. This time I picked a different location. It is a beautiful college campus in Liberty, MO. Our first star is little Joelle Kimbrough (Jo Jo). She is 9 years old and a glamour girl. Jo Jo brought her own little purse with all her glam accessories. She is super easy to work with and great at posing. There’s really not much directions I had to give. Jo Jo is a natural born child model. Her mom Shea is gorgeous too. This is another model I worked with the same day. MeShell Nelson is a print model. She is a school teacher in the day. After I shared a sneak peak of her picture, I got numerous likes and comments on...
This year flew by really fast. It is the second year of Bokeh Story Photos and first full year. I counted all the sessions that I edited in my Lightroom folder. The number is 96! Among these sessions some are bigger sessions like the Iway family reunion , some are small like modeling headshots. This number might not be a big one for a full-time photographer, but it is big for me because I only take sessions in the weekends. Photography has been a great balance in between taking care of two little kids and working a full-time design job. Sometimes I don’t know how I could handle all these in my life. I really learned and improved my project management skill this year! All of these sessions make a...
Time flies. Can’t believe it’s at the end of 2013! Also I have kept my promise by doing project 10×12 every month this year! It is a unique and personal project. This project allows me to capture sweet moments among my own family members. I took a few days off of my day job to spend some quality time with Audrey and Wesley before the holidays. My dad flew all the way from China to spend the holiday with us. I only get to see my dad once or twice a year. Last time he came in March. The kiddos of course missed grandpa a lot. We had a big winter storm right before the holidays, so both my dad and my father in law worked together to build a snowman....
Remember the beautiful Wizard of Oz family? They are back for their family photos. This is another themed family session with the Hentges. The Hentges was so excited to return to normal life for their actual family photo session. As usual, I drafted out 20 ideas with different settings and props. Kim and I worked on prioritizing ideas and arrange them into a productive agenda because it would be cold. We know things won’t always go as planned, but it is good to have a plan. We shot this in the last weekend this fall while there were still leaves on the tree. It was actually Audrey’s 12th birthday that day, so I had to take a couple more headshots for Audrey. I just love this girl. She is so...
