It has been a while since I used my studio for a session. We have been shooting outside a lot since it is so nice. I had a series of headshots coming up that were originally scheduled outdoor, but the forecast said that thunder storm every day for a week, so studio headshot was my backup solution. I wanted the light to be evenly lit on subject’s face for this one, so I used a square setup for this one. From the photos, can you tell how I set up the lights? There’s a slight difference in between the two settings. Can you tell?
Audrey volunteered to test the light for me. She had lots of fun in my studio. Wesley even got excited and wanted to play in my studio. I would never think that I could get a good smiling picture of Wesley sitting on a studio chair, but I did! The two even wanted to sit together for pictures, but I knew they wanted to play, so I just let them play and took a few candids.
The first setup works out great for blond or brunett. The other with a background light works better for Asians because we have dark hair. There are so many different setups for headshots. I have used my mentor’s beauty/glam headshot setup. It is every photographer’s dream to get a headshot setup like that, but I just didn’t have the budget right now. I totally made this setup on my own. Here’re all the gears I used, but I will leave the position of the setup for you to guess.

Thank you Kate!
These are great! Oh my goodness the little kids are hilarious.
Thanks Audrey. They are fun!
Aw, nice headshots of your kids! My kids don’t pose for me, ha. One day.
Thanks Eden. Yes, kids normally won’t pose for pictures. I like taking candid shots for kids. It’s a lot of work to get them to pose. Your kids are adorable. When they are a little older they will pose for you. In the mean time, just capture candids.
