I had the honor to shoot my friend Nancy and John’s engagement session last weekend. It does help me preparing my session if I know more about my subjects.
Nancy is from San Francisco. John is from Kansas City. They met in Dubai for work. Nancy moved to Kansas City for him a couple years ago. John proposed to her after taking her on a short pilot lesson in a private airport. They want the theme to be “Flying over 2 Cities”. They already had a photo taken in front of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and want to take some photos in a famous location in Kansas City, which they picked Union Station.
I love shooting in Union Station, but the key is to get there early! I mean EARLY enough before everyone arrives. I brought an assistant to hold reflector for me as I am a natural light photographer. Thanks to my friend Lawrence for getting up so early and joining us in this multi-stop adventure. The giant waiting room in Union Station is great for couple or engagement photos. Nancy and John’s first outfit is very formal. I forgot to mention to them that black and white are the hardest to work out in photos, but they are so elegant and I can’t complain much. The pictures we took in the waiting room of them dancing are one of my favorites.
We also took some pictures in front of Union Station, where they had their second outfit on. Nancy and John are both sports fans, so they were wearing Chief and Royal’s tops. They were wearing San Francisco sports tops in their Golden Bridge picture. The couple wants their save the date card to have 3 photos on them – one on the top in the airport (flying over), one on the bottom left is in front of Golden Bridge, and one on the bottom right is in front of the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City. This is their “Flying over 2 Cities” theme.
Finally, they want to go back for more pictures in that private airport, where he proposed to her. It was super cold that day and I asked Nancy to put coat on when we were not shooting. The airport owner was nice enough to let us borrow a plane to shoot their engagement photos. We all got in the tiny plane and took some great close-up photos. I also found a tiny yellow airplane and we took some pictures in front of that one. I have to say that I love engagement photos. This is by far my favorite photo shoot ever. We took a lot of pictures and I edited more than 100 photos. I was addicted in editing and making them look perfect.
Nancy and John are getting married in San Francisco in October, but will also have a reception in Kansas City. Congrats again Nancy and John!

Lai has such cute ideas for her photo sessions!! Very different ideas and props for each individual client and awesome backdrops!! She treats each session very personally and does fantastic work! She took Valentine’s Day pictures of my son in her studio and they turned out extremely cute!! She spent hours of her personal time editing our photos and went above and beyond what I ever would have expected! She even posted pictures online for us to see as she finished editing them, which started… Read more
My family has taken many photos with different photographers but I was especially drawn to Bokeh Story Photos because of their idea of telling a story with the photographs. Lai made us feel very comfortable in front of the camera. She let us do our own thing while periodically posing us as well. She also did a great job in capturing the expressions of our baby boy, which is not an easy thing to do since they can be quite fleeting! I would recommend this service to anyone who wants a spec… Read more
