Happy Valentine’s Day! One of my new year’s resolution for 2014 is to spend more time with my Irish twins Audrey and Wesley. They are the reason why I started Bokeh Story. I had a Valentine’s day studio mini sessions last year and it was a big success. This year I decided not to offer any mini sessions on Valentine’s Day. Instead, I spent a fun day with the kids in my studio. Ever since I started renting a studio in Kansas City downtown last summer, Audrey has been begging me to go to “downtown” to take pictures. I have a natural light studio at home and it is in our basement. She asked if she could go to the “downtown” in our basement. Her wish is granted. I set up a Valentine scene last weekend and had lots of fun with my kids.
Audrey is such a little ham. She does not need me to give her much directions. She could come up with a variety of poses on her own. Wesley is a year younger than her and was interested exploring the setup. He was a lot better than last summer, where he threw a tantrum on the backdrop. I took some posed pictures for each of them, and then Wesley wanted to ride his infant carseat and would not come out, so I had to bring that to the studio. He was out grown that carseat as soon as he turned one. We had lunch after that. The kiddos wanted to take more pictures, so we returned to the studio. They said they were done with posed pictures, so I took their Christmas present – a crayola table to the setup and let them play. Why I didn’t think of this before? This is like lifestyle candid pictures in a studio setting. I captured lots of great moments of them playing cars and play dough. They worked together on a little project. It was great teamwork! Finally, I let them sit together for some pictures. It was a surprise to me that Wesley smiled a lot more in these pictures. These were very sweet moments.
This year I plan to build a full studio in my basement. I already purchased 3 alien bees studio strobes and light stands. I have tons of props and vinyl backdrops that I’ve been buying since last year. This way I could shoot whenever it’s raining, snowing, or at night without leaving my kids. Audrey and Wesley would love to be my models too.
