It was such an honor to be the official formal attire portrait photographer for the 21st Annual Raising Hope Gala for The Philippine Medical Society of Greater Kansas City. Raising Hope Gala is a fundraising event to support PMSGKC’s upcoming mission of providing health care procedures and necessities to those who don’t have access to basic medical services. All the proceeds goes to covering the cost of sending personnel as well as logistics for sending supplies.
This is my first time setting up for formal attire portraits. All of my backdrops are for kids and they are too small for formal portraits. I was not given a lot of notice and ran out of time ordering online. I do not want to use seamless paper for formal portraits. One of my teammates at my day job gave me some really good ideas for a last minute backdrop. It was the day before the event… I went to Home Depot got a huge canvas drop cloth and Michael’s for a bottle of Rit Dye (black). I used my washer to dye the white canvas drop cloth to a dark grey one and hung dry. I was not really sure how it would turn out as this is my first time, but it really worked out well.
Although I love natural light photography, I am addicted to studio lighting. I am not a fan of bright lighting for formal portrait. The theme of this year’s Raising Hope Gala was A Night in Venice, so I want the portrait to be romantic. The following portraits were taken using only one strobe. I had lots of fun meeting guests and taking portraits for them. I contributed half of the portrait sales to next year’s medical mission trip. More stories to be revealed in the events post coming next week…
Liz and Mike were the first couple coming to my portrait booth. How gorgeous and handsome are they! Liz has a blog called Consider the Lily, where she has some wonderful posts about her mission trip experience. She is a great photojournalist.
These are the beautiful girls of Dr. Daniel and Yvonne Spurlock’s – Alexa, Mia, and Sophia.
My physician Dr. Christine Nedeau and her husband Joel, who is the Master of Ceremony of the event.
Gorgeous Ms. Mary Ann Deming and her husband. We both love taking food pictures.
My portrait booth is way too much fun when Liz and Sam both came! Look at Sam’s gown! And.. She is going to be a doctor.
This group reminds me Grey’s Anatomy. One doctor and three dental school students.
MJ and Paco. Mr. Paco is the studio owner and principal instructor of the Paco Dance Academy in Mission, KS
These were taken almost at the end of the event. Can you feel the mood for love?
What great looking father and son!
This is our table of new and old friends.

These are great portraits and I love the light. Good choice for one strobe!
Thank you Angela!
Great shots!
How lucky this organization is to have you as their photographer! You do amazing work. Thanks for sharing this great event!
Thank you Donna! Your compliments means a lot to me.
lovely images.
You made it easy. It was relaxing, and we just felt like we were goofing around while we were all dressed up — which is probably not how you should act in formal attire. lol.
Thank you so much Liz! You are so much fun to photograph. Love your personality. This is the best part of photographing events – meet new cool people and make new friends.
